TROMSØ
Tromsø is a city and municipality in Troms County in Northern Norway. The administrative centre of
the municipality is the city of Tromsø.
Tromsø city is the ninth largest urban area in Norway by population, and the seventh largest city
in Norway by population (70 000). It is the largest city and the largest urban area in Northern
Norway, and the second largest city and urban area north of the Arctic
Circle in Sápmi (following Murmansk). Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the
small island of Tromsøya, 350 km (217 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. Substantial parts of the urban
area are also situated on the mainland to the east and on parts of Kvaløya, a large island to the west.
Tromsøya is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel and to
the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge. The city is warmer than most other places located
on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.
The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway,
the oldest of which dates from 1789. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church built in 1965, is probably
the city’s most famous landmark. The city is a cultural centre for the region, with a rich array of
festivals throughout the year, including the Northern Lights Festival and the Tromsø International
Film Festival.
Some of Norway’s best-known musicians, Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge of the electronica
duo Röyksopp and Lene Marlin, grew up and started their careers in Tromsø.
CLIMATE
CLIMATECLIMATE
CLIMATE
Tromsø is located well north of the Arctic City, but due to the Gulf Stream the weather conditions are
not typical of the Arctic. August is still summer, but cooler than what most are used at this time of
the year.
The month of August is characterized by falling daily high temperatures, with daily highs decreasing
from 15°C to 12°C over the course of the month, exceeding 20°C or dropping below 8°C only one day
in 10.
White nights
The sun is only gone for a couple of hours each night in August. It sets around 23:15 and rises again
at 02.30. It will not get dark during your stay since the sun is only below the horizon for a few hours;
a phenomenon called “white nights”.
