GRADUATION CELEBRATION 2022
LETTER FROM THE DEAN
Dear Health Sciences Graduates,
Today is a very important day in your lives and careers, and like the
many faculty members who guided you on this journey, I am proud of
each of you for the many accomplishments you’ve achieved during your
time at GW SMHS. As we look forward, I am excited about what you
will do in the years ahead and I am grateful for your commitment to the
future of health care.
I know that your years at GW will be memorable, not only because you
studied and contributed to the fight against the world’s largest health
crisis in a century, but also because you persevered, you were resilient,
and you have accomplished your goals.
In the coming days, as you take the next steps in your careers at an exceptional time in the history
of medicine and health scienc
es, I hope that you will keep your minds open and continue to grow,
learn, care, and contribute to the health care profession. I am confident that you will have a positive
impact on the patients you serve and on the health and wellness of our local, national, and global
communities.
On behalf of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, I wish you the very best on this graduation
day, and I welcome you into the GW SMHS Alumni Community.
Warmest regards,
Barbara Lee Bass, MD, FACS, RESD ’86
Vice President for Health Affairs
Dean, GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences
Chief Executive Officer, The GW Medical Faculty Associates
Professor of Surgery
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE & HEALTH SCIENCES 5
LETTER FROM THE SENIOR ASSOCIATE DEAN
On behalf of the faculty and sta of the George Washington University,
let me congratulate each of our graduates. We acknowledge your
dedication and applaud your accomplishments during your education
in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The mission of GW
Health Sciences is to drive innovation and quality in health and health
care delivery through education, scholarship, and service – locally,
nationally, and globally. We embrace core values of diversity & inclusion,
collaboration, and innovation as we live that mission. We are grateful
for the contributions you have made during your time at the School of
Medicine and Health Sciences to help shape a community that values
cultural and intellectual diversity and demonstrates integrity, creativity,
and innovation.
Your education at GW has also been reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has
challenged you to lear
n and your faculty to teach in new ways, while maintaining your collective
focus as millions of individuals all around the world have faced this devastating infectious disease
and its complications. Society and our health care systems alike faced tremendous challenges. I am
heartened that we can gather together today to see you walk across the graduation stage on campus
this year; your accomplishments and perseverance during this challenging time prove how valuable
you will be to the health care and research communities you will serve. You have earned this moment,
so let us celebrate it with excitement and open hearts, but also with care and compassion for the
many families who have faced loss during this dicult period.
Today, you become a part of the university and the school’s alumni family. This family is stronger
and more dynamic because of your talents, passion, and capabilities. Some of you will heal through
innovative and compassionate care. Others will advance biomedical, translational, and health
services research. Many will contribute to cultures of excellence, and you bring us hope for a better
future in health care and the health sciences—a future where attaining the highest level of health for
all people is realized. Take time to thank the many people who supported you during your journey to
this point. Consider honoring that support in the years ahead by helping others reach their goals and
career aspirations. Let me end with a few words of wisdom and guidance that others have imparted
to me. Serve others with compassion. Accept that you will never possess all the knowledge you need.
Instead, learn to harness knowledge and recognize your own limitations. Be an agent of positive
change within your community. Be present—take time to nurture your personal and professional
relationships. Finally, choose the path of leadership, and lead through your character by embracing
courage, integrity, selflessness, empathy, collaboration, and reflection.
Along with all the faculty and sta in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, I oer my
congratulations and wish you every success in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Reamer L. Bushardt, PharmD, PA-C, DFAAPA
Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences
