Dr. Karen Tonso Annual Scholarship
Dr. Karen Tonso retired from WSU in 2014. This scholarship was created by Dr. Tonso in
honor of her doctoral students: those who took her courses, those whose dissertation
committees she chaired, and those whom she served as a member of their dissertation
committees. These doctoral students’ demonstrations of hard work, perseverance and
dedication to excellence inspired this scholarship. It creation makes evident Dr. Tonso’s
desire to enhance the likelihood that future doctoral students will complete their degrees.
Several of Dr. Tonso’s former doctoral students also contributed to this scholarship in
honor of Dr. Tonso’s retirement.
Urban Educator Annual Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Sharon
Elliott and Dr. Jo-Ann Snyder
Sharon Elliott, Ed.D. and Jo-Ann Snyder, Ed.D played pivotal roles in the evolution and
success of the Alternative Pathways to Teaching (APT) programs at the Wayne State
University College of Education. The primary purpose of the APT programs, was to
increase the numbers of teachers from minority and other underrepresented groups in
shortage areas in Detroit Public Schools (DPS) and in Pontiac. Creative alternative avenues
to obtain teacher certification were designed to meet the needs of these students. Drs.
Elliott and Snyder served the College of Education’s Teacher Education Division for 52
years and 28 years respectively. This scholarship is created in honor of their body of work
and the successful completion of the APT program.
Michael and Sara Nancy Horn Vandierdonck and Caroline M. Bartholomy
Endowed Scholarship in the College of Education
This scholarship was established to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the College
of Education pursuing a career in teaching. The donor was inspired by his mother, who
instilled in him the idea that he would be the first in the family to graduate from high
school and attend college. While that idea was never a burden, he never fully embraced
it until he arrived on campus to begin his education at WSU.
Drs. Jay and Marianne Cook Victor Endowed Scholarship
The Victors have lifelong connections to Detroit as they have benefitted from educational
opportunities of the Detroit Public Schools and Wayne State University. During their 35-
year careers, they served the Detroit area, he as a dermatologist and she, as a psychologist.
The current efforts to revitalize Detroit are exciting but the long-term success depends on
better education of its children. This scholarship seeks to support students participating in
TeachDETROIT, an innovative program which aims to prepare teachers for this challenge.
Edward Walker, Ed.D. Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1992 to honor Edward Walker, who for many years served as program
coordinator for the vocational education program in the college’s Teacher Education
Division. Professor Walker served on the education faculty from 1972-91, and he passed
away in 2001.
Susan Wartell Endowed Student Teacher Scholarship
In the fall of 1961, after two years of teaching, first in New York and second in Berkley,
Michigan, Susan Wartell enrolled at Wayne State University. She was earning $4,500 a
year and knew that a master’s degree would help increase her pay. For the first two years,
she taught and took classes. The next three years were dominated by motherhood, but
in the spring of 1966, she received her master’s degree in education with a major in
elementary guidance and counseling. She was the first in her family to earn a graduate
degree. Her undergraduate degree was paid for by an aunt and her master’s degree from
her earnings as a teacher. She was determined to donate to both her alma maters when
she could afford to, especially since the cost of college has become so expensive. She
remembered how busy student teaching was and wanted her donation to help ease the
financial pressure.
